KHL Skills Competition

khl logoThe Kontinental League held it’s Skills Competition with Ilya Kovalchuk’s Team West defeating Alexei Morozov’s Team East 6-4. Among the highlights of the competition was the fastest skater and hardest shot. Evgeny Kuznetsov (Traktor Chelyabinsk) won the fastest skater for Team East by skating around the bigger rink in only 13.82 seconds, just over 0.6 seconds slower than the NHL record set by Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin last year (13.218 seconds).

Then of course there was the hardest shot which is always taken with a grain of salt here in North America since they place the puck by the hashmarks instead of the top of the circle, something Greg Wyshynski thinks the NHL should let Zdeno Chara and Shea Weber do in order to see if they can break the world record set last year by Alexander Ryazantsev (114 mph).

This year’s winner was Ryazantsev (Severstal Cherepovets) once again with a blast of 170.67 kph (106.05 mph). Check out the link above for the complete list of winners as well as video highlights from the shootout, shooting accuracy, fastest skater and goaltending competition.

There were some pretty impressive moves in the shootout including Jakub Petruzalek (Khabarovsk Amur) who stickhandled and scored with the butt-end of his stick, a great glove save by Michael Garnett (Traktor Chelyabinsk) on a shot-between-the-legs attempt by Nikolai Zherdev (Moscow Oblast Atlant), Evgeny Kuznetsov (Traktor Chelyabinsk) pumping iron between shots before shattering a puck on his second attempt a la Patrick Kane last year and Pavel Datsyuk (CSKA Moscow) making a fancy deke and going backhand shelf while skating backwards then once again nailing the Linus Omark flip shot.
